  • Week 5: Unit 5 Chinese Food

Prerequisite

This course is open to all with no prerequisites. It is not necessary to learn the other two parts or one of them before learning this part.

Instructors

WANG Gui
WANG Gui, a lecturer of School of Foreign Languages, Hubei University. With more than 15 years' teaching experience, she has been teaching a series of courses including College English, Introduction to Chinese Culture, English Listening and Speaking, Interpreting and so on. In the mean time, she has been to the UK and Hungary as a trainee and visiting scholar. From 2010 to 2011, she was sent to West Virginia, USA to teach Chinese in both Suncrest Middle School and Morgantown High School. Currently, she is doing her Ph.D in Linguistics at E?tv?s Loránd University (ELTE) in Hungary. Her academic interest is cultural, linguistic and pedagogical studies. She is responsible for Unit 3 about Chinese characters and Unit 4 on Chinese festivals.

WANG Zhiru
WANG Zhiru, Professor of School of Foreign Languages, Hubei University. She received her B.A in English at Hubei University in 1981 and M.A in Linguistics for English Language Teaching from Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages of Lancaster University, UK, in 1998. In over 30 years of teaching she has taught various courses such as Cninese Culture, Language Learning Principles and Strategies, Language Teaching Methdology, Course Design and Material Development, College English, etc. From 1995 to 1996, she taught Chinese at the University of Southern Queensland and Woolongong University, Australia. Her research interest is in second language acquisition, intercultural communication, online and offline blended learning, cross-cultural communication, etc. and has published more than 20 research papers. She authored four textbooks such as Introducing Chinese Culture in English (2017), Real Communication Practice Book (2010), New Development College English (2009), English Teaching Methodology (2004). Due to her excellence in teaching, she was awarded the title of Prestigious Teacher by the government of Hubei Province and the title of Model Teacher by the Ministry of Education of China. Professor Wang is the head of the course. She deliveres instructions of Unit 1 about Confucius and Unit 2 about Laozi.

LU Xiaoli
LU Xiaoli is an Associate Professor of the school of Foreign Languages, Hubei University. She received her M. A. from Hubei University in 2004. She has been teaching for 14 years. Her devotion to teaching makes her a popular teacher among students. She had been to the UK as an academic visitor for 1 year. She actively participated in activities organized by the Confucius Institute and introduced Chinese culture to the local people in the year when she was in the UK. She is particularly interested in the culture of Chinese food and traditional wedding custom. Together with her team, she has been undertaking a research project about Chinese Culture with 2 articles on the teaching of Chinese culture published. She teaches Unit 5 about Chinese food.
