Human rights are developed through the constant dialogue between international human rights bodies and domestic courts, in a search that crosses geographical, cultural and legal boundaries. The result is a unique human rights grammar, which this course shall discuss and question, examining the sources of human rights, the rights of individuals, the duties of States, and the mechanisms of protection.

We shall rely extensively on comparative material from different jurisdictions, to study a wide range of topics including, religious freedom in multicultural societies, human rights in employment relationships, economic and social rights in development, or human rights in the context of the fight against terrorism.

At the end of the course you’ll be able to:

  • Analyze and comment on key controversies surrounding the development of international human rights law
  • Use conceptual tools to follow the developments of human rights law
  • Be most effective in contributing to the enforcement of international human rights law

Les prérequis

Knowledge of the fundamentals of International Law (subjects and sources of International Law/ principles governing international responsibility). Such knowledge may be acquired by the successful completion of Louv5x – International Law.

In addition, students should be familiar with the requirements of graduate-level courses and should preferably have already followed some law courses in order to be familiar with legal concepts and legal language.

L’Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) est une université belge francophone multisite.

À la suite de la scission de l'université catholique de Louvain en deux entités juridiquement indépendantes (1968), l'université francophone s'est implantée dans sa majeure partie à Louvain-la-Neuve (Brabant wallon) depuis 1972 et à Woluwe-Saint-Lambert pour la faculté de médecine, l'université néerlandophone demeurant à Louvain, sous le nom de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven).

La plateforme

EdX est une plateforme d'apprentissage en ligne (dite FLOT ou MOOC). Elle héberge et met gratuitement à disposition des cours en ligne de niveau universitaire à travers le monde entier. Elle mène également des recherches sur l'apprentissage en ligne et la façon dont les utilisateurs utilisent celle-ci. Elle est à but non lucratif et la plateforme utilise un logiciel open source.

EdX a été fondée par le Massachusetts Institute of Technology et par l'université Harvard en mai 2012. En 2014, environ 50 écoles, associations et organisations internationales offrent ou projettent d'offrir des cours sur EdX. En juillet 2014, elle avait plus de 2,5 millions d'utilisateurs suivant plus de 200 cours en ligne.

Les deux universités américaines qui financent la plateforme ont investi 60 millions USD dans son développement. La plateforme France Université Numérique utilise la technologie openedX, supportée par Google.
