Key Information
About the content
After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the international energy scene and the issues at stake in the oil and gas industry – i.e. consumers, producers, main actors and prices
- Describe the main processes and techniques of oil and gas exploration and production – i.e. geosciences, drilling and production – and describe their cost structure and their legal framework
- Describe the main operations in refining, petrochemistry and gas processes and assess the diversity of products and the interactions between those three industries
- Describe the specificities of the marketing and distribution of oil and gas and their products.
Syllabus
Week 1 : You will explore the international energy scene and the global economic environment, resulting in a better understanding of the major oil and gas issues. Then you will analyze the parameters which influence prices of crude oil and understand the hedging techniques available. You will learn about source rock formation, the maturing of organic matter and hydrocarbon migration and underground trapping . You will understand what we mean by conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources and you will then be able to understand the challenge of changing resources into reserves.
Week 2 : You will discover petroleum geosciences : from sedimentary basin assessment, seismic imaging and reservoir characterization, prospect definition to discovery evaluation and reservoir appraisal You will then gain a better understanding of the reserve estimate and development strategy of an oil or gas field: especially the principles of reservoir characterization and engineering including reservoir modeling and development.
Week 3: Then you will review drilling operations, well architecture and equipment. Finally, you will learn about the challenges of designing surface facilities with a special focus on offshore production. The next part will be dedicated to Exploration and Production rules and players and the future technological challenges. You will learn about the main refining processes and their operating characteristics and understand the relation between quality requirements, processes used and composition of final products. Then you will learn the basic knowledge of gas production and treatment.
Week 4: You will discover the petrochemical and plastic industries and more specifically all the processes to transform naphta and gas into petrochemical bases and polymers and, afterwards, the various types of plastics and polymers. Then you will understand the interactions between refining, petrochemistry and the gas industry. Finally, you will learn about oil logistics, gas logistics and all the specificities of marketing and distribution of oil and gas products.

IFP School is a school that brings to students and young professionals from around the world training in the fields of energy to meet the needs of industry and the demands of society in particular on sustainable development and innovation.
Bravo !

The course is giving a great summary of the oil and gas industry. It is very helpful if you are fresh in this field.
