The BBC is a British public service broadcaster founded in 1922 and based at Broadcasting House, Westminster, London. It is the oldest national broadcaster in the world.
Headquartered in the UK, it is a non-departmental public body with responsibility for the media. The BBC has a reputation for cultural excellence, and is sometimes affectionately referred to as 'The Beeb' or 'Auntie' by the British. For many years, it was the only television and radio broadcaster in the UK.
It is the largest broadcasting company in the world in terms of gross revenue and viewers. Before the arrival of ITV (Independent Television) in 1955 and private local radio in the 1970s, it held the broadcasting monopoly.
