About the content

This online course is designed for mental health professionals wishing to gain a basic understanding of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): the psychotherapy with the strongest evidence base. The course will review the historical development of CBT, describe the basic principles and update participants on its current status. Factors which make CBT a suitable or unsuitable treatment option will be discussed, as well as some tips on how to prepare patients for referral. Participants will learn how some elements of CBT can be used in everyday psychiatric practice.

Over this four-week course, you will be able:

  • To describe the basic varieties of cognitive and behavioural therapies and their historical development
  • To describe the general cognitive model and recognize the factors involved in the development and maintenance of emotional disorders and critically evaluate the evidence base for cognitive behavioural therapy
  • To recognize the structural, interpersonal and technical components of a cognitive behaviour therapy session
  • To assess the suitability of a patient for formal cognitive behavioural therapy and utilize simple techniques in a psychiatric session
