Syllabus

This free online course will help you to design assessment instruments to measure student outcomes. It focusses on rubrics and surveys. Each week will explore a different aspect of assessment, and mix theory and practice. You will build your own assessments, and share and test them with other learners. Week 1 – Building quality assessments We will consider: the importance of validity, reliability and fairness in developing assessments; the national assessment instruments available in different countries; how to develop your own assessment instrument; and the impact of technology on measurement. Week 2 – Rubrics We will discuss: the role of rubrics in assessment; how to design effective rubrics to evaluate performance; and how to test rubric calibration, including using the bucket approach. Week 3 – Surveys We will explore: the role of surveys in assessment; the steps in writing surveys; and how to design effective surveys for use with a selected audience. Learn with expert educators from the AACTE The course has been developed by American Association of Colleges for Teaching Education (AACTE) – the premier voice on educator preparation in the United States. You will learn with Linda McKee – an experienced teacher trainer and Senior Director of Quality Support Initiatives at AACTE.
