The core of any effective employee development program is regular, one-on-one coaching conversations with managers. There are a number of coaching styles and personalities out there, and managers need to develop an approach that is authentic to them. At the same time, employee coaching is a skill that can be improved and there are certain principles that can set the framework for a positive teaching moment.
We wouldn't have so many disciplines and practices for psychotherapy, personal development and even continuous corporate improvement if every person had the same response to every input. For coaching to work, there needs to be a competent coach and an individual that is both open to coaching and being able to respond well to this method. Both sides need to seek rapport, understanding, mutual respect and open communication.... If that's not the case, then we should stop and consider other empowering approaches. A huge part of any relationship is the ability to quickly and accurately understand what works for each person... That's the only way to really bring the best out of ourselves and the people around us. No technique in the world is going to have the same results for everyone and in every single situation.
